Cal was born in November of 1952 in Lakewood, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland) as Calvin Paul Border. In 1959, his family moved to Hollywood, Florida where he lived for 24 years before coming west to settle in Las Vegas in December of 1983. In 1989, Cal began his present daytime career at the Riviera Hotel as a Facilities Engineer. He plans on retiring from that trade within the next two years so he can devote more time to his other interests; music being one of them. Cal's music experience began at age 5 when his mother taught him to play the piano. That same year, a childrens TV program had him sing a song for them, and that was his first public appearance. As a teenager, he sang in the church choir, and performed solos there as well. In his early 20s, he became a member of a Gospel quartet. In December of 1989, he purchased a karaoke machine for home use. This was his first active parcipation in pop music, and he sang songs that were made famous by several different pop artists. Tony Bennett, Kenny Rogers, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Perry Como, John Denver, and Frank Sinatra were some of these artists. About 7 years ago, he began singing pop music solos in public at a local karaoke venue and some people in the audiences at these shows would remark about how much Cal sounded like Neil Diamond when he sang Neil's songs. These remarks spurred Cal's interest in Neil Diamond, so he went online to do some research about him. Like most people, Cal associated Neil Diamond with that long black hair he had in the movie "The Jazz Singer", but he noticed that Neil was wearing his hair much shorter in the post 2000 era of his career. To top it off, Neil's new look made him look like he could be one of Cal's relatives. So Cal went out and bought some clothes that Neil would wear, and made some alterations to the way he had the barber cut his hair. Most people are not aware that Neil wore his hair similar to Elvis in the earliest years of his carreer; 1966 to 1967. In 1968 , he began wearing his hair longer and continued with this for the next 3 decades. Then as the new millenium dawned Neil took on the short hair look that he now has. This is the look that Cal has adopted for his tributes to Neil. For the last 6 years, Cal has been a Neil Diamond tribute artist; singing for parties, weddings, charity events, conventions, and special venues. During the past year, he has performed in a number of shows, hosted at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nv. |
